Does Mewing Actually Work? The Evidence, Honestly

June 16, 2026 · RankMyFace

Mewing — resting your entire tongue against the roof of your mouth — is probably the single most famous looksmaxxing technique. It's named after Dr. John Mew, whose orthotropic theories claim facial structure responds to oral posture. The promise: a sharper jawline and better facial development, for free.

So does it work? Short version: for adults, probably not in the way the before/after photos suggest.

What the evidence actually says

  • In children, whose bones are still developing, oral posture plausibly influences facial growth — this is the least controversial part of the theory, and it's why real orthodontists care about mouth breathing in kids.
  • In adults, facial bones are done growing. There are no quality studies showing tongue posture remodels an adult mandible or maxilla. The mainstream orthodontic position is that it doesn't.
  • Most viral "mewing transformations" are explainable by three things: fat loss, posture, and lighting. A tucked chin vs. a level chin changes a jawline photo more than a year of tongue posture ever will.

Why it can still "work"

Here's the nuance: mewing bundles in two things that genuinely improve how your jaw *looks*:

  1. It closes your mouth. Lips-together, teeth-lightly-touching resting posture looks better than mouth-open resting face, full stop.
  2. It fixes your head position. You physically can't mew with severe forward head posture — so people who start mewing accidentally fix the posture that was hiding their jawline. The posture was the fix; the tongue got the credit.

So: harmless, free, and the side effects are actually the point. Just don't expect bone remodeling, don't buy a course, and absolutely don't touch the "hardmaxxing" escalations some forums push.

The honest jawline playbook

If a sharper jawline is the goal, the ranked playbook is: body-fat reduction, posture, deliberate grooming, and styling that suits your face. We wrote the full version here: how to get a better jawline naturally.

And before you invest months into any of it — find out if your jawline is even your limiting factor. It might be your skin or your haircut doing the damage. A RankMyFace scan scores all five features from your photos and tells you where the real headroom is. Work the biggest lever first.
