What Is Looksmaxxing? An Honest Beginner's Guide
June 2, 2026 · RankMyFace
Looksmaxxing is the practice of systematically maximizing your physical appearance. The word came out of online forums, but strip away the jargon and it's something people have always done: figure out what you're working with, then optimize everything that can be optimized.
The internet version comes with a lot of baggage — pseudo-science, miracle techniques, and some genuinely harmful advice. This guide is the filtered version: what actually moves the needle, ranked roughly by effort-to-impact.
The two categories
The community splits methods into softmaxxing (non-invasive, reversible) and hardmaxxing (surgical or drastic). Everything in this article is softmaxxing. Our position on hardmaxxing is simple: anything involving surgery is a conversation for a doctor, not a forum, and anything like "bone smashing" is flat-out dangerous nonsense. Skip it.
What actually works
- Skin. The highest-leverage improvement for most people. A basic routine — cleanser, moisturizer, SPF daily, and adapalene if you have acne — visibly improves skin in 4–12 weeks. See our men's skincare routine.
- Body fat. Facial definition is mostly leanness. A jawline emerges as body fat drops; there is no exercise that "builds" one. More in our jawline guide.
- Hair. The right haircut for your face shape changes your proportions for free. It's the fastest visible upgrade on this list — see hairstyles for your face shape.
- Brows and grooming. Cleaning up eyebrows, keeping facial hair deliberate (see beard styles for a weak jawline), nose/ear hair — small stuff that compounds.
- Sleep and hydration. Dark circles and facial puffiness respond to boring fundamentals faster than to any product.
- Posture. Forward head posture visibly shortens your neck and softens your jawline in photos and in person.
What's oversold
- Mewing — tongue posture is fine, but the evidence it remodels an adult jaw is weak. Full breakdown here.
- Face exercises / jaw trainers — masseter hypertrophy is real but subtle, and overuse can cause jaw pain and a wider (not sharper) lower face.
- Miracle supplements — if it sounds like a shortcut around diet, sleep, and skincare, it is.
Where to start
Don't guess. The whole point of looksmaxxing is being systematic, and a system starts with a baseline. Get an objective read on your jawline, skin, symmetry, eyes and hairline, identify which is actually dragging your appearance down, and put your effort there — not on whatever a random video told you to fix this week.
That's literally what we built RankMyFace for: an AI scores each feature, shows you your realistic potential, and orders the work by impact. Scan, follow the plan, rescan in a month. The number moving is the feedback loop that keeps you going.
Reading about it doesn't move your score.
