Hunter Eyes and Canthal Tilt, Explained Without the Hype
July 4, 2026 · RankMyFace
Looksmaxxing forums are obsessed with the eye area, and they have a whole vocabulary for it: hunter eyes, canthal tilt, upper eyelid exposure, orbital vectors. Some of it maps to real facial-aesthetics concepts; a lot of it is used to doom-spiral. Here's the sober version.
The vocabulary
- Canthal tilt is the angle between the inner corner (medial canthus) and outer corner (lateral canthus) of your eye. Outer corner higher = "positive tilt," associated with an alert, classically attractive look. Slightly positive to neutral is the most common reading on attractive faces — but plenty of good-looking people have neutral or negative tilt. It's one ingredient, not a verdict.
- Hunter eyes is forum-speak for a deep-set eye area: low eyebrow position, minimal visible upper eyelid, a strong brow ridge. It reads as intense. It is overwhelmingly determined by bone structure and genetics.
- Upper eyelid exposure — how much lid shows below the brow. Less exposure reads "deeper set."
What's actually changeable
Be honest with yourself here, because this is where forums sell fantasy. The bone structure around your eyes is fixed. What you *can* change:
- Dark circles and puffiness. Sleep consistency, hydration, less alcohol and sodium, and a caffeine eye cream if you like marginal gains. This is the #1 fixable eye-area issue and it's very fixable.
- Eyebrow grooming. The frame around the eye. Cleaning up strays under the brow (not over-plucking the top) subtly lowers and defines the brow line. Brushing brows into shape with a clear gel is a real, underrated upgrade.
- Squinting less on camera / relaxed glare. Photo technique, free.
- Glasses. The right frames literally redraw your eye area — see glasses for your face shape.
- Overall leanness. A leaner face deepens the appearance of the eye area too.
What we won't recommend: canthoplasty and other eye-area surgeries pitched casually on forums. That's surgery, with real risks, and any conversation about it belongs with a qualified surgeon — not a Discord.
Keep it in proportion
The eye area matters in facial aesthetics — but the forum fixation inverts reality: it's the *least* changeable feature, which makes it the *worst* place to spend your energy. Skin, hair, grooming, and leanness are where effort converts to visible results.
Want to know if your eye area is even a weak point, or if you're worrying about a 7.5 while your skin sits at 4.9? A RankMyFace scan scores all five features independently — eyes included, canthal tilt and all — and points your effort at the actual bottleneck. Free first scan.
